Don't Forget Your Backpack! Safety and Snowmobile Essentials

By Anne Clarke

One of the biggest dangers of snowmobiling are the unpredictable avalanches that can happen—especially during your off trail riding adventures. Just because you are an adventurer does not mean you should not be safe and prepared. You should always have something with you in which to store emergency equipment.

Like any kind of backpacks, you want to make sure that your snowmobile backpacks do not weigh you down too much. Backpacks have a bad reputation for contributing to back pain and even scoliosis. However, if you wear it so that the bottom of the backpack rests on your seat, you will not have to worry about the discomfort.

If that will not work for you—or if you find that your backpack is sliding off or flopping in the wind—there are snowmobile backpacks designed with belts that will essentially tie it onto your back. Some snowmobile backpacks are also especially designed for comfort in the shoulders and neck areas, by providing padded shoulder straps for your shoulders.

So, what do you need to take with you when you are snowmobiling in the back country off trail? First and foremost you will need to keep a shovel in your snowmobile backpack. The type of shovel that fits in a snowmobile backpack has a unique sort of design. It folds up to fit inside without taking up too much room. Then, in the event of an avalanche or other emergency, you can use your shovel to try and dig your way out.

It has been proven that the first few minutes are crucial in the case of an avalanche. In many avalanches triggered by snowmobiles, the snowmobiler is thrown very far from his or her snowmobile. Therefore, if you have a compartment in your snowmobile for storing things—to store your emergency equipment in your snowmobile will more than likely do you no good in the case of an avalanche. You will want a first aid kit, maybe some food in case you get stranded, and always make sure that you are wearing your beacon—strapped to your chest.

Another avalanche safety tip is to always go snowmobiling with someone else—especially if you plan to go off trail. Both of you (or all of you) should be wearing snowmobile backpacks containing the necessities I listed above, and everyone who snowmobiles should wear a beacon anytime he or she goes out off-trail.
