Temagami and Marten River Yellow Perch Fishing

Yellow perch do not rank high among the "battlers" in the fish world, although they will put up a fight equal to most fish of a small size. Nor are they highly regarded for their trophy size, with 7 to 9 inch fish most commonly caught 10 inch or larger fish are referred to as a "jumbos." However, once on a feeding binge perch provide some mighty fast and furious fishing with catches of 10 to 15 fish in as many minutes the rule rather than the exception. A freshly caught stringer of perch, fried to a golden-brown, is unsurpassed in flavor and a meal second to none!

Spring and fall, perch favor shallow water (4 to 8 feet deep) and will bite all day long. During the rest of the year they are found in deeper water and bite best in morning and evening. They do not normally feed at night.

Preferred tackle includes a sinker placed on the bottom end of the line and two hooks just above, spaced about 18 inches apart. Two-to-10-pound test monofilament is standard, and hooks should be No. 6 to No. 8. Minnows 1 to 3 inches long and very small crayfish (or pieces of crayfish tail) are preferred bait, but worms, night crawlers, grasshoppers, crickets and wigglers are also good at times.

Perch do not normally take flies or artificial lures, although small spinners are sometimes attached ahead of natural bait to attract these fish. If you don't take any fish in 10 to 15 minutes, move. If catching only small perch, move or fish deeper. Perch can be very delicate biters, so watch closely, set the hook firmly, and keep a steady pressure on the line as you pull them in. Worthwhile keepers average 7 to 10 inches in length.

Yellow Perch

Perch are a great fish for young and old. They can be fished at any time of the year and in many depths of water. Perch are a great starter fish for kids or catching the big ones can be a great challenge to even the seasoned angler. Some of the biggest and most impressive catches are caught in the winter time.

Most perch are caught 2 or 3 inches off the bottom of the lake. Live bait is usually the bait of choice for most anglers with maggots being the most popular. You can tip a lead head jig with bait or use a plain number 4 to 6 hook with a split shot about six inches above the hook.

Perch can be found in many of the same places that you would find walleye. In the spring time you can look for them in the shallow bays and on shallow flats where the sun is warming up the water. For the rest of the year you can fish weedy or rocky humps. My favorite place in the summer time is in deep water with high weeds. I fish just above the weeds. You should try this; I think you will be surprised at what comes out of the weeds to feed on your hook.

You don’t want to use heavy tackle when fishing for perch. Light tackle is preferred because perch are not heavy fighters. You shouldn’t use more then 4 pound test. The lighter tackle makes casting the smaller hooks easier.

For many years perch fishing has been a great way to kill a bad day of fishing. Perch fishing has helped in the bonding of many fathers and their kids. It has even helped to get a lot of women involved in the great sport of fishing. So remember that no matter what a bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work.
