TEMAGAMI FISHING VACATION IN ONTARIO - FISH TEMAGAMI LAKES

Marten River Fall Fishing in Ontario

What Is Fall Fishing?

Fall fishing in Marten River can be great if you fish the right places and take advantage of it. ... It is my favorite time of year for fishing - the Marten River mornings are cool, afternoons are perfect for fall fishing.

Marten River fall fishing offer some of the best walleye, bass, and northern pike fishing found in the area. Truly some of the best tasting walleye you'll find in Marten River lakes. Northern pike, bass and pan fish of every species are well established and common. If you haven't fished the chain of lakes in Marten River Ontario, you are missing out on an experience to be long remembered.

Here at Ridgewood Cottages in Temagami you'll enjoy great fishing, and all the amenities you need for a vacation like no other.

Marten River Fishing Tips for Walleye

  • Walleye spawn just after "ice out" when water temperatures reach 45-50 degrees. Following spawning, males feed heavily. Females, however, rest for about two weeks, then go on a feeding binge. This is the best time to catch a trophy.
  • Walleye, are night feeders but don't be fooled into thinking this is the only time to fish them. Water color has a definite effect on the feeding habits of the walleye. Many lakes are dark water lakes. High noon is a good time to fish for walleyes in these waters.
  • Keep in mind, too, that walleye are gentle feeders. They hit light. Reel them in slowly.
  • Walleyes are basically bottom feeders, but don't ignore those fish that suspend over drop offs in deep lakes. Some of the best summer walleye fishing is provided by suspended fish.
  • Some people have found walleye hang about 3 to 6 feet from the bottom and run in schools on the edges of shelves where the bait fish are. You will usually catch them just at dusk and a half hour after dark they usually stop hitting.
  • Don't forget Temagami and Marten River Ice Fishing - This is a great time of year to catch all species. Present the right bait and you'll get lucky!

Marten River Northern Pike Fishing Tips

  • There are plenty of northern pike in the Marten River chain of lakes - live bait is usually the key
  • You'll need a bit more patience if your are fishing for trophy northern, we know they are not feeding on minnows!
  • You'll need to buy some good size bait since large 20 pound northern are usually feeding on 1/2 - 1 pound walleyes
  • Some people use Musky rigs to catch the big ones
  • Northern Pike like to ambush their prey. Rocky points and narrow sections of the lake are good places to find Northern
  • Pike will play with your bait. It is not uncommon for a big Pike to hit and let go several times before the bait is taken. With this in mind you have to show some patience.
  • Wait for your float to be under the water for at least one minute before you set the hook.
  • Slowness and action are needed when fishing for a trophy northern pike.

Crappie Fishing Tips

  • Crappie fishing is usually really good both in the winter and early spring
  • Try fishing at different depths until you get action
  • Evening and night fishing with lighted bobbers works best
  • Use a small yellow & white swedish pimple with small minnows
  • In open water make sure to keep your bait moving, cast out and slowly jerk the rod as you real the bait back in.
  • When ice fishing you should give the rod three quick jerks then bring in a little line, continue this action until bait is in the hole, then drop bait to about a foot from the bottom and try again.

Fishing Marten River Area Lakes

  • Marten River is located in the heart of northeastern Ontario making it easy to fish all the great lakes including Marten Lake, Red Cedar Lake by Hwy # 64, Wicksteed Lake, and many others.
  • Plan to bring a variety of fishing equipment since there are many species of trophy fish in our Marten River waters.
  • Many of the Marten River and Temagami area guides have online fishing reports, it pays to keep an eye on these reports if your planning to fish on many of the lakes in the Marten River area.

The Best Way To Fish A River

By Trevor Kugler

If you enjoy wading rivers, you need to try the best way I've ever seen to do just that. Provided your river is large enough, the best way to fish many rivers is a personal pontoon boat. The go by many different names but basically they are a personal boat and are perfect for exploring your favorite river. I do la lot of wading rivers and because of brush on the banks of the river and deep water; I can only walk most rivers for two or three miles at the most. With a personal pontoon boat, this problem is solved. Miles of river can be covered on a few hours.

With the help of this "personal boat", if you will, you'll gain access to new water. Much of which will experience much less fishing pressure that the rest of the river. Less fishing pressure means more bites and catching more fish, it's as simple as that. Who could argue with that? A personal pontoon boat is the best way to fish a river.

When you're fishing the river on a personal pontoon boat, it's also nice just to float down the river and enjoy nature from time to time. Actually, the more time that you spend fishing in this manner, the more time you will spend doing just that. Just talking time along your trip to stop and enjoy nature and everything it has to offer.

Once you try fishing from your own personal pontoon boat, you'll be hooked. You'll find that it really is the best way to fish a river. You'll find that you catch more fish as well. As I mentioned earlier, just the fact that you can access area's that receive much less fishing pressure than many area's on the river is a huge advantage to you. This is especially true in the west. Most anglers won't hike more than a mile from where they park their vehicle, so this leaves vast stretches of river that only get fished by anglers with canoes, rafts, or personal pontoon boats, and a personal pontoon boat is much easier to transport than a bulky raft or canoe.
