Visit North Bay Ontario
NORTHERN DAY TRIPS
Ridgewood is conveniently located
at the halfway point between North Bay to the south and New Liskeard to the
north. Day trip to these northern towns for golfing, shopping, or a cruise on
the Chief Commanda. Visit museums to learn of our northern heritage - logging
and mining, or the home of the Dionne Quints. A large Pow-Wow is held by our
native Indian community during the summer and is a definite experience.
Arrangements can be made for a tour of the area by air providing an awesome
view. There is a day to spend cruising Lake Temagami which includes a delicious
shore lunch.
Dionne
Quintuplets Over seventy years ago the world was amazed by the birth of the
Dionne Quintuplets on May 28, 1934, in nearby Corbeil. This amazement quickly
turned to love for the five identical tiny girls born to Oliva and Elzire
Dionne. The Quint's combined weight at birth was only 13lbs. 5ozs. and they had
to be kept in incubators for the first month of their lives. Their lungs were
so small that diluted doses of rum were required daily to help the Quints
breath properly. It was a one in 57 million chance of giving birth to identical
quintuplets and even less chance of them surviving, but the Dionne Quints did.
Chief Commanda Located at the
North Bay waterfront, people come from miles around to enjoy scenic cruises on
the Chief Commanda II.
Heritage
Railway Company When visiting the North Bay Waterfront, be sure to wander
over to the Heritage Railway Company. This is a miniature railway which runs on
2700 feet of 15" guage track. We run both an actual steam engine and a diesel
engine. You experience travel in an old fashioned way as you buy your ticket at
the station and once on the train, the conductor punches your ticket just like
the old days.
Dream Catcher
Express Travel by train into the magic of fall from North Bay to Temagami -
Ontario Northland is pleased to present the Dream Catcher Express, a fall
colour train which travels 100 km northward from North Bay to Temagami, Ontario
and returns on the same day. This captivating train excursion allows you to
enjoy brilliant fall colours through large viewing windows in the comfort of
your passenger coach. While in Temagami, a number of unique experiences are
available including tours of an aboriginal tipi village, scenic bush plane
flights and boat tours of beautiful Lake Temagami.
